Constructing Syntax from Discourse

چکیده
What is functionalism? Both Silverstein (1987) and Nichols (1984) have analyzed in detail the variety of ways functionalism has been used by linguists. Silverstein made a division into four types of functions, referential and pragmatic: (a) `sense-structure', (b) the `abstract, "sentence"-internal distribution of forms,' (c) the `use of signal forms for purposive, intentional social effect' (d) the `indexical occurrence of form tokens' with reference to discourse and nonlinguistic context.

Discourse: Codes and Clues in Contexts
Some of the meaning of a discourse is encoded in its linguistic forms. Thls is the truth-conditional meaning of the propositions those forms express and entail. Some of the meaning is suggested (or 'implicated', as Grice would say) by the fact that the encooer expresses just those propositions in just those linguistic forms in just the given contexts [2]. The first klnd of meaning is usually la...
متن کاملThe Political Discourse Role of Zoroastrian Religion in Constructing the Territorial Identity of Iran in the Sassanid Era
Introduction: From the view of postmodern political geography, territorial identity is formed as a text within a set of systematically mental elements under discourse and then it finds objectivity in a node called "space". In other words, the objectified identity is the result of a set of relations regulated by political power Which at a certain point in history, make the meaning of territory. ...
متن کاملSentence Planning as Description Using Tree Adjoining Grammar
We present an algorithm for simultaneously constructing both the syntax and semantics of a sentence using a Lexicalized Tree Adjoining Grammar (LTAG). This approach captures naturally and elegantly the interaction between pragmatic and syntactic constraints on descriptions in a sentence, and the inferential interactions between multiple descriptions in a sentence. At the same time, it exploits ...
متن کاملThe Unified Annotation of Syntax and Discourse in the Copenhagen Dependency Treebanks
We propose a unified model of syntax and discourse in which text structure is viewed as a tree structure augmented with anaphoric relations and other secondary relations. We describe how the model accounts for discourse connectives and the syntax-discourse-semantics interface. Our model is dependency-based, ie, words are the basic building blocks in our analyses. The analyses have been applied ...
متن کاملSentential Structure And Discourse Parsing
In this paper, we describe how the LIDAS System (Linguistic Discourse Analysis System), a discourse parser built as an implementation of the Unified Linguistic Discourse Model (U-LDM) uses information from sentential syntax and semantics along with lexical semantic information to build the Open Right Discourse Parse Tree (DPT) that serves as a representation of the structure of the discourse (P...
